Virginia Tech with Malcolm Delaney really does make a strong case, guard play generally rules the ACC and The ACC’s leading scorer is back with last years team pretty much intact. Whether UNC will have adequate guard play remains to be scene, serviceable isn’t always good enough in the ACC.

As Duke fans we want to believe Dan Wiederer when he says that Austin Rivers is a lock for Duke, but as seen with the Harrison Barnes saga, and even the Terrence Jones commitment and then 180 degree turnaround nothing is set in stone until you see them in a uniform. You have to believe Rivers when he says nothing has been decided, you have to believe him when he says he is open to any of his contending schools. It isnt like its a choice between Duke and Davidson. The schools on River list are rich basketball schools. Ask Billy Donovan how sure he was that AR was going there. It’s simply too early to tell, anyone saying otherwise either has some super secret information or is just trying to stir the pot. I say its mostly the latter.

Dan Wiederer may very well have some insider information, or it could be an educated guess.

Our spotlight today is on Justin Anderson ( @JDotAnderson23 )rising star out of Montrose Christian Academy. At 6’5, and around 210, his frame and athletic ability is off the charts, and beyond his years. He uses these gifts to overwhelm defenders on the offensive end, speed, quickness and strength are assets on display whenever he takes the court. The kid has impressive hops and blow-by ability from the wing position. Defenders be warned, he will put you on a poster.

Justin continues to build a resume of skills to bring to the next level, known already for his athleticism on the offensive end, those same skills are being shown on the defensive end as well. His attitude for wanting to be challenged and not believing the hype but showing and proving is what separates this prospect from the others.

“One thing my parents have always taught me,” Anderson said, “is to be humble and be hungry. Somebody might say I’m a top-five player, but they didn’t see that kid in Africa working out who’s going to come over here and be better than a lot of players who are ranked.

“It’s nice that a lot of people think I’m a top prospect, but in the end, it really doesn’t mean anything. You have to keep working because there’s always somebody else who’s working and wants your position.”

Seeing Justin play alongside Josh Hairston was a thing of beauty, side by side you would think Anderson was the older of the two with a body ready for college basketball at the age of 16.

With positive experiences in the AAU circuit and USA basketball, at his young age he is a seasoned veteran of international play and also has faced the best talent in the nation during his summers.

“Some people might say, ‘You didn’t get a lot of playing time down there. That must have been frustrating,’” he said. “But you have U.S. across your chest. You’re playing for your country. I don’t care who scores. I don’t care who has the ball. I was proud to be part of that team, and I was willing to do whatever I had to do to help the team win.

“I feel the same way about whatever team I’m playing for. Montrose is a great program and I’ll do whatever they need me to. Boo’s program has a great reputation and has been good for a long time, and I want to do everything I can to help them stay at that level.”

It’s no wonder he is attracting big time attention from strong schools such as Duke of course, UNC, Texas, Maryland, Virginia, Vtech.

Whether or not he ends up at Duke, he is one to watch.

Nolan, in addition to having an incredible summer, has his mind right. Focusing on what Duke needs in order to repeat, that includes some loses (but not too many). Seems as though in evaluating the season Nolan has realized that there were key loses last year that aided in the mental development and subsequent title run.

While Duke does have a very good team coming back it’s going to depend on team chemistry and finding a way to meld the talent, this is going to fall on the shoulders of Nolan Smith, Kyle Singler and freshman Kyrie Irving.

While no one is saying the Devils should repeat, the more that words gets dropped in articles the more pressure this team is going to feel. There is definitely a target place firmly on the back of this team and I am sure the coaching psychology will be centered around that.

Also in scheduling news Duke will be playing Princeton November 14th in Cameron.

Ahhh back from vacation where I have two observations:

1. Lebron James has an ego the size of the Sun and Cleveland will hate him forever, and

2. Seaworld is pretty damn fun.

I’ve never really liked Lebron James, and I never really had a valid reason until now, so I can now say he has earned my dislike. Doing his best Harrison Barnes impersonation he creates a TV event like no other just announce where he’s going to be playing basketball, not even Michael Jordan did this. It was all self important, self centered and pretty childish in my opinion. At least Barnes has the excuse of being a kid. What is Lebrons excuse?? As usual today it’s more about him than it is the sport, makes you wonder if people like that even really respect the game? When you make yourself bigger than that game it shows a lack of integrity, respect and humility. If he thought the pressure was on in Cleveland, it’s really going to be on in Miami, it’s win or face the firing squad of ridicule.

Seth Curry is really going to be the x-factor for Duke in the coming year, with scoring options in Singler, Smith and Irving, Curry will bring quite a punch from 3. How will Duke juggle the minutes? I think it will work nicely into what K wants to do, a faster team means a team that will need more rest, the plethora of guards on this team plays right into K’s hands. Good to see him getting better with Nolan and Kyle with the help of Chris Paul. Per the Luke Win article mentioned below:

The player I was most intrigued to see was Seth Curry, the Liberty transfer who was lying in wait on Duke’s bench, in dress clothes, during their national title run. Both he and his brother, Stephen, were in the gym on Sunday, and their three-point shooting forms differ: Stephen’s shot is now a textbook wrist-flick with perfect rotation, while Seth’s is often a knuckleball with little spin. It’s a highly accurate knuckleball, though; Seth seemed to knock down as many (or more) threes than anyone in the camp over the course of drills (the camp was probably 85 percent drills) and scrimmaging. He should be a deadly weapon in Duke’s backcourt, especially given how much attention defenses will pay to teammates Nolan Smith, Singler and Kyrie Irving. “Seth is going to bring so much to our team with his shooting and playmaking ability,” Smith said.
