Tweet Yes it’s the name of my favorite David Bowie song (you young kids should look that up) but it also refers, in this case sarcastically, to the prognosticators and predictors of college basketball rankings. In my opinion the vast majority of them seem to want to cater to the youngest common denominator, crowning players in the preseason, before they’ve even stepped foot on a college campus. Anointing these high school students as tops in the game based on potential that is rarely reached in a freshman year. It seems this is the way the game is trending and consequently [ Read More ]

Tweet Great piece on Andre Dawkins from GoDuke.com, his year off and his return to Duke Basketball. Dawkin’s journey is something that we can all take a lesson from as far as dealing with emotions in the moment and taking the appropriate time and space to do so. It’s good to see him back and healthy mentally and physically and returning to basketball on his terms. Continuing the Summer Grind series, Duke Blue Planet features Tyler Thornton looking buff and ready to take on that leadership role on this team, his mentoring and guidance is a very important piece to [ Read More ]
Tweet So it appears Coach K is mulling a return to USA Basketball and has not closed the door. I think most people hoped that Coach K would return and continue the run he’s piloted for USA Basketball. Jerry Colangelo says he expects a decision within a weeks time. On the recruiting trail long time target Theo Pinson will be informing suitors as to what college he will be attending next year. Pinson will be choosing between Duke, Georgetown, Indiana, Louisville and North Carolina. Some feel Duke has a shot, but in my opinion (no sources) with Grayson Allen already [ Read More ]
Tweet It’s very hard not to love Tyler Thornton. Not only does he bring a toughness to the Devils that is occasionally lacking on the court, but what he does off the court is much more impressive and important. This article by Sports Illustrated underscores Thorton’s reach and we all need to stop and congratulate him on being nominated for the SI College Athlete of the Year. Quinn Cook will suit up for Duke as a junior this coming year and will most likely get the lion’s share of minutes at the point. Here is an article by accbasketball.com ranking [ Read More ]
Tweet Some tidbits… Firstly, after investigating the Lance Thomas jewelry situation, “The NCAA has found no evidence of a rules violation in this situation based on the information available, and both the NCAA and Duke consider the matter closed.” A settlement was reached in the case between Thomas and the jeweler details of which are not being made public so surely the conspiracy theorists will be out and about as usual but, well, nothing to see here folks. Sorry to disappoint. Regarding next years schedule, it was announced that Duke will play in next season’s NIT Season Tip-Off at Madison [ Read More ]
Tweet It appears the first Blue Devil commit in the class of 2014 will be shooting guard Grayson Allen out of Jacksonville, Florida. The 6’4, 185 lb guard’s recruiting got hot and heavy quickly with the Duke offer and he wasted very little time in snatching it up. Allen brings a very adept shooting touch as well as an explosive and quick first step. He’s as dynamic a shooting guard as Duke has had in a while. Allen is the first commit in the class of 2014 Here is my earlier post with video. Committed!!! twitter.com/GraysonJAllen/… — Grayson Allen [ Read More ]
Tweet Firstly, Duke center Marshall Plumlee had successful surgery on his foot today, he will be out at least a few months, surely it is from residual effects of the break earlier in the year. Hopeful for a successful rehab for the youngest Plumlee brother. This is the third Duke surgery so far this off-season. Duke has shown interest in Memphis transfer Tarik Black, as reported earlier, so have a multitude of schools. Duke also showed interest in Rutgers transfer Eli Carter at the guard spot. Here is some behind the scenes footage of Duke commit Matt Jones (@matt_jones8) courtesy [ Read More ]
Tweet If you need a mini-fix of Dukies there is always the NBA Playoffs. Admittedly, I am not a huge NBA fan but for those Duke fans that are there are Dukies in the playoffs for us to watch and support. It’s anyone’s guess who will end up in the finals. Conventional wisdom and available NBA championship odds say the Heat will repeat but nothing is a given in the League as we all know. In the East: Defending world champions Miami Heat have former Duke great Shane Battier. An integral part of their rotation Battier brings a lot of [ Read More ]
