Another Slow Start for Duke, Same Result — Duke 68 – Clemson 40

By January 8, 2013No Comments

Top ranked Duke rolled over the Clemson Tigers 68 – 40 on the strength of Quinn Cook’s 27 points (career high), 5 assists and 4 steals.  Cook, after going 0 for 11 in Duke’s win over Wake Forest, stayed hours after the game and got shots up in Cameron. Clearly it weighed on the sophomores mind, and Quinn corrected it and got buckets. Clemson holding Duke to 25 points at the half sounds like a positive but when you only score 10 yourself, its not much of one. Dukes issues on the offensive end were mostly self-inflicted, missing easy shots and shooting 29% and 44% from the charity stripe.

The night began looking like the last game, with Ryan Kelly leading Duke in scoring. Kelly had 12 points at the half to Clemson’s 10. Kelly would not re-emerge from the locker room after injuring his foot. Coach K mentioned after the Wake Forest game that Kelly had tweaked his foot while Duke was on break, and against Clemson in the waning moments of the first half he would injure that same foot. Kelly will have an MRI Wednesday morning to determine the extent of his injury and subsequent availability for the weekend game against Wake Forest.

Duke would come out and shoot much better against Clemson to the tune of 72% in the second half to end the game shooting 48% while holding Clemson to 28% for the game. Clemson would make a dent in Dukes lead with a full court press, forcing Duke into 10 turnovers in the second half, 6 coming from Mason who had to replace Ryan Kelly on inbounds plays. In the end Duke would overpower Clemson and push the lead t0 28, the final margin.

Mason Plumlee finished he game with 13 rebounds but only 8 points, Plumlee would have trouble getting shots over Clemson’s Devin Booker but did assist on 5 Duke makes in the game. Duke would also get little from Seth Curry who scored 8 points, going 3 for 10 from the field. Curry scored 1,000th career point in the win.
