Duke Destroys Elon 98 – 72…Coach K adds a Feather

By December 22, 2010No Comments

Duke dispatches of Elon from the Southern Conference 98-72 on the strength of Nolan Smiths 22 points and Kyle Singlers 24, the only real significance of this game other than Duke Staying undefeated and working their way into league play shape is that Coach K tied Dean Smith for second all time in victories at 879. Having already cemented his legacy as one of the greatest  if not the greatest of all time in any sport, Coach K adds another feather in his cap.

Duke will have two more tune-up games before the heart of the ACC schedule begins to fine tune the offense cobbled together after the Irving injury, which sadly is still something that has the rumor mill filled with stories but none can be substantiated so we will leave them unmentioned. Duke has a date with Miami in Durham on the 2nd that is sandwiched between too lesser opponents. UNC Greensboro and Alabama-Birmingham will be last OOC opponents until the end of January. Miami cannot be overlooked as they tend to give Duke hell as we saw last year.

Duke will have to contend with Durand Scott who is as good a guard as there is in the ACC, quick, tough and can score the basketball with the best of them. Malcom Grant is the other major contributor for Miami, averaging double figures and shooting a decent percentage from 3. Duke without Kyrie Irving will have their hands full with this team, but Andre Dawkins has shown a propensity for good defense to go along with his stellar shooting and decision making so it will be probably one of Dukes toughest matchups this year in the ACC.
