There were a lot of factors working against Duke last night against Ohio State: Fatigue, Duke had just returned from the Bahamas, playing 3 games in 3 days; Complacency, seeing everyone anointing them the number 1 or 2 team in the nation; Expectation, everyone was expecting this Duke team to come out fast and exact payback on Ohio State – the team that beat down the Devils by 22 last year.  Duke also had a few things on their side, one being Cameron Indoor Stadium and the Cameron Crazies. The crowd was raucous and loud and it was the type of atmosphere that one would expect from a 2 vs 4 matchup. Duke truly did have it’s 6th man last night. The other thing working in Dukes favor was Rasheed Sulaimon. Already playing like an upperclassman Sulaimon shook off a poor first half to burn the Buckeyes for 17 points all in the second half. Sulaimon was the spark that Duke needed to get over the hump against a tough Ohio State team after trading baskets and runs in the middle of the second stanza. Sulaimon did way he does best, showing his prowess at getting his own shot, and also getting open off of screens. The freshman discovering his shot seemed to spur on the Duke rally. If Sulaimon was the spark then Mason Plumlee was the engine. Plumlee kept the game within reach during the first half when Duke shot a woeful 30% from the floor only managing 6 buckets in the first half in totality. Mason made a living at the foul line going 9 for 12. Duke would need those points as the buckeyes defense was as good as advertised, taking Duke completely out of what they wanted to do. Duke could not penetrate, and the offense was stagnant, and led to Duke going 10 minutes without a field goal.

With the onset of the second half and Duke down by 8 Duke started to show signs of life, hustle plays and rebounding picked up for the Devils and Sulaimon took over the game. Ohio State finally relinquished the lead with about 5:40 left in the second half. Duke would never give it back. Free throws down the stretch from PG Quinn Cook sealed the win for Duke.

Mason Plumlee finished the game with 20 points and 17 rebounds, Rasheed Sulaimon had 17 points, Ryan Kelly put in 15 and Quinn Cook ended with 12 points and 8 assists.
