Devil Of The Day-
Last night the number one ranked team in the nation hit the court for their home opener. Duke would play without their highly touted freshman trio of Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden. With two of Duke’s best big men out, Coach K would have to insert a different big man into the lineup.
The man Coach K inserted into the lineup was Sophomore Chase Jeter. The 6’10’ big man out of Bishop Gorman high school in Las Vegas has never really had a chance with the Blue Devils. Last season he averaged 2 points and 2 rebounds in 32 games with Duke. But in last night’s blow out win against Marist he got his chance and proved it was deserving.
Jeter scored 11 points and had 7 rebounds in Duke’s 94-49 blowout victory against Marist. Jeter played great basketball making plays on both ends. We should see Jeter back in the lineup against Grand Canyon tonight. We should see a lot more of Jeter with the injuries to Giles and Bolden.
Honorable Mention-
Many players stood out for the Blue Devils last night including freshman guard Frank Jackson. Off the bench Jackson scored 18 points in 25 minutes, he also dropped 4 dimes and made a couple of athletic defensive plays. He gave Duke the push that they needed off the bench.
Jackson still needs time to develop off the bench and learn from player like senior guard Matt Jones. This isn’t a bad thing though, with this much effort off the bench, this can be a positive for Duke.
