Duke freshman DJ Steward has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week after helping the Blue Devils pick up a road win over Notre Dame in the conference opener last Wednesday.
The guard out of Chicago, Ill., scored 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting in his return to the Midwest, including a 3-of-4 mark from three-point range as Duke came away with a 75-65 victory. He added five rebounds, including four defensive boards, while recording an assist and two steals in 29 minutes.
Over his last two games – versus then-No. 6 Illinois and at Notre Dame – Steward has shot 11-of-20 from the floor and 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. He is averaging 12.6 points per game this season with a .442 field goal percentage and .417 clip from three-point range, and is also contributing 4.6 rebounds per contest.
Steward is the second Duke player to be named ACC Freshman of the Week this season, joining Jalen Johnson on Nov. 30. Over the last seven-plus seasons, Duke has had an ACC Freshman of the Week in 62 of a possible 122 weeks. Steward becomes the 18th Blue Devil to have won the award at least once in that time.
Duke is the only school to have multiple players earn ACC weekly honors this season.
No. 20 Duke (3-2, 1-0 ACC) will play its first game in 13 days when it welcomes Pittsburgh (5-1, 1-0) to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Tuesday, Dec. 29. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. ET on ACC Network.
