Duke dominated from start to finish and did it in a multitude of ways against Virginia Tech. Defensively Duke held The ACC’s leading scorer Erick Green to 22 points which doesn’t sound like a success but when you watch this kid play you can tel he is capable for exploding at any given time. Duke was able to contain him and also keep him and the entire Tech team off of the 3 point line to the tune of 1 for 16.
As mentioned in my pregame post Duke would need to win the rebounding margin and had the capabilities to do so. They did by 9 (34 to 25). Mason Plumlee did not have a monster game but had a very solid outing and played very smart and energetic basketball tonight. Mason would score 13 points in the win. Mason went 4 of 6 from the field and 5 of 6 from the free throw line. Plumlee also tied for the team high with 5 assists (Tyler Thornton also had 5) and pulled down 12 rebounds as well. Defensively Mason played much better against Tech, there are not stats for the amount of shots he disrupted but Plumlee did register 3 blocks in the game and stayed out of foul trouble doing so.
Finally, for Senior Seth Curry a great game at his fathers Alma Mater. Curry would tie Erick Green for the game lead with 22 points. Curry was red-hot from beyond the arc going 5 out of 6 from distance. The big difference between Tech and Duke is supporting cast and Duke was able to get contributions from a number of theirs. Josh Hairston scored 11 points in the win notching his second straight double figure scoring output. Rasheed Sulaimon also benefited from Dukes offensive efficiency scoring 17 points.
Duke was uber efficient from beyond the arc going 8-9 for just under 90% in the first half and 70% for the game. All in all a great team to face after a loss, despite great shooting from Erick Green Duke prevails.
Some noteworthy and exciting news for Duke has who are hanging and dissecting every quote and blurb about senior forward Ryan Kelly, two nuggets from Coach K via Laura Keeley:
#Duke‘s Ryan Kelly ran for 15 minutes in the pool yesterday. Has started shooting free throws. K is more optimistic he’ll be back

#Duke‘s K on Kelly: “He’s shooting free throws now, but he hasn’t done basketball stuff yet. Hopefully we can get to that next week.” — Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 22, 2013
#Duke‘s K on Kelly: “Again, no timetable, but it’s moving, it’s moving in the right direction. Now we believe we’re going to get him back.” — Laura Keeley (@laurakeeley) February 22, 2013
#Duke‘s Kelly has been working his legs, hips and core with a medicine ball. “He’s sore, but his foot is not sore,” K said.
