Mike Krzyzewski added the second member of his 2017 recruiting class adding shooting guard Gary Trent Jr out of Prolific Prep by way of Apple Valley, MN. Trent is a world class bucket getter and can do it from all three levels on the court. Trent excels in getting the ball to the basket and uses his broad shoulders and muscular frame to overpower smaller guards. His size also affords him the ability to snatch a rebound on the defensive end and push the ball up the court to start and end the break.
Trent considered UCLA and Michigan State. UCLA was seen at one point to perhaps have an advantage in his recruiting with his move to nearby Prolific Prep but in the end Trent signed with Duke and joins a budding class that includes 4 star shooting guard Alex O’Connell out of Milton (Alpharetta, GA). Trent is the number 8 prospect according to ESPN and the number 11 prospect in the class according to 247 Sports.
With Duke targeting a small group of guy this recruiting cycle the margin for error is low which is compounded by the possible mass exodus from this year’s roster. Duke is slated to lost Matt Jones and Amile Jefferson to exhausted eligibility and has a chance to lose freshmen Harry Giles, Jayson Tatum and Marques Bolden. There is an outside chance Duke could also lost Frank Jackson or Luke Kennard to early entry as well depending on how the season goes.
Duke fans will be intently watching the recruitment of Trent Jr.s best friend Wendell Carter who has decided just this week to sign in the early period and has for a while been mentioned in a package deal along with Gary Trent Jr. Carter is also considering Georgia Tech and Harvard along with the Blue Devils.
