Duke guard Jared McCain has been recognized as the CBS Sports/United States Basketball Writers Association Freshman of the Week for his performance during the Blue Devils’ 78-70 victory over No. 10 Baylor in the SentinelOne Classic inside Madison Square Garden on Dec. 20.
McCain scored a game-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field, including 3-of-6 from 3-point range, and a perfect 4-of-4 in free throws. The 6-3 guard also distributed three assists and grabbed two rebounds.
In the Blue Devils’ first triumph over a top-10 team in more than two years, McCain drained a game-changing 3-pointer during a 14-1 second half run that pushed Duke’s advantage to three possessions with four minutes remaining.
A native of Sacramento, California, McCain is averaging 10.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest this season, having started all 11 games for the 8-3 Blue Devils. He has stepped up his offensive output in the past three outings, averaging 18.3 points per game, including a pair of 21-point performances.
No. 16 Duke returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 30, hosting Queens inside Cameron Indoor Stadium at 2 p.m. (The CW).
