Freshman Kyle Filipowski has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week after continuing his strong start to the Blue Devils’ 2022-23 season. Over the last 10-plus seasons (since the start of 2013-14), the ACC Rookie of the Week has been a Blue Devil in 76 of a possible 155 weeks. 22 different Duke freshmen have won the award at least once in that time.
Filipowski became Duke’s first freshman all-time to open a career with three consecutive double-doubles as he scored a career-high 17 points alongside a career-high 14 rebounds in 33 minutes vs. Kansas last Tuesday.
On Friday against Delaware, he set a new career-high with 18 points but snapped his double-double streak with eight boards while helping lead the Blue Devils to a 92-58 victory.
His 36 rebounds through three games were more than any Duke freshman through the first three games of a season, surpassing Mike Gminski’s 33 in 1976-77 and Zion Williamson’s 32 in 2018-19.
Through Nov. 19’s games, the Westtown, N.Y., native is the only freshman nationally with multiple double-doubles and his three double-doubles are tied for the national lead with 11 other players. He’s seventh nationally for rebounds (12.0) and leads all freshman in the NCAA.
