Duke freshman Kyle Filipowski has been selected to both the Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America Team and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) All-District III team. Filipowski is the Blue Devils’ 93rd all-time USBWA All-District pick and extends Duke’s streak to 16 consecutive years with at least one All-District selection.
The Westtown, N.Y., native enters the NCAA Tournament as a nine-time ACC Rookie of the Week, a near unanimous selection as the ACC Rookie of the Year, the ACC Tournament MVP and as one of only eight power conference players nationally — and the only Division I freshman — averaging at least 15 points and nine rebounds this season. He leads NCAA freshmen in double-doubles with 16 and posted back-to-back double-doubles in the ACC Tournament semifinals and championship games to help the Blue Devils secure their league-leading 22nd ACC title and 11th this century. In helping lead Duke to the ACC title, Filipowski averaged 19.5 points and shot .667 (24-of-36) from the field over Duke’s three games in the ACC Tournament.
Filipowski is just the sixth Duke freshman all-time with 300 or more rebounds in a season, standing fifth on the Duke freshman single-season rebounding list with 305. His 16 double-doubles are tied for second-most by a Duke freshman and his 30 double-digit scoring games is tied for 10th-most. During the regular season, he became just the third Duke freshman all-time to have at least 28-15 in a game after a monster 28-point, 15-rebound effort against Pittsburgh, leading the Blue Devils to a 12-point second-half comeback victory.
The USBWA District III includes all Division-I teams from the states of North Carolina, Maryland, South Carolina and Virginia. The USBWA Men’s All-District Teams are selected based on voting from its national membership of 900-plus. USBWA All-District Teams have been voted on since the 1956-57 season, its founding year.
