In a game in front of the hometown Jon Scheyer used everything in his repertoire the long ball, the layup, the scoop. It was a thing of beauty, a brilliant performance. Scheyer dropped 31 in the United Center on 10 of 19 shooting as Duke put it on the Cyclones of Iowa State 86-65. Scheyer had help from Nolan Smith who put down 20 points with 4 rebounds and 3 steals and the third member of the Duke triumvirate, Kyle Singler, contributed 15 points and 8 rebounds.
Once again despite great offensive performances Dukes defense stood out, Duke forced 18 turnovers, 10 of which came from steals. Duke also won the rebounding battle 35 to 28 against a tough frontline.
Positives: Where Duke really excelled we beyond the arc and at the free throw line. Duke shot 42.9 percent from distance while holding Iowa State to 22.2 percent. At the charity stripe duke shot a whopping 90.5 percent.
Negatives: Dukes big still are not bring the heat offensively and coming into ACC play this is a concern at least to me. If we are going to be dominated by the outside shot and guard play I believe we are going to come up short of the ultimate goal. It’s fools gold to think we can consistently shoot the ball at that kind of clip especially late in the year. Solid production from the forward and center spot is a must. Bringing the Plumlees along is the key. Lance Thomas has expanded his offensive game and can definitely put some points on the board as can Brian Zoubek, but the Plumlees in the right situations can really be weaponry underneath.
