Final Thoughts
After losing to Kentucky it’s clear where the Blue Devils need to improve and it begins in the backcourt. Duke’s guards all but disappeared against Kentucky in the second half and freshman Cooper Flagg was forced to carry the load. Caleb Foster and Tyrese Proctor have to be better decision makers for the Blue Devils if they are to have the type of season that the talent on this team dictates. Duke needs to iron out not only their guard play but also their transition defense which suffered in the second half. While Duke should win this game, it’s more about how they win this game.
- The backcourt has a lot to prove.
- Will the Blue Devils be at full strength?
- Is the poor shooting against KY an aberration?
- Can Duke find a way to increase their depth?
a lot of people called on Duke to play both Darren Harris and Isaiah Evans, the majority of those people lack the basic knowledge that coaches play who they think gives them the best opportunity to win. Throwing 2 players, one of which is generously 175lbs (probably more like 165lbs) to go against a supremely experienced team and expect them to be effective is the fools gold of fans. Most of which assume that a recruiting ranking instantly translates into a college ready player. I think both are going to be fantastic players but putting kids in a position to fail is something coaches tend to try to avoid. I tend to trust the people who see these kids day in and day out with how effective they will be. That all being said I would love for Duke to become a team that can go 10 deep, but that takes time. Time that Duke does have because…checks notes…we are only 3 games into the season. Take a breath.
