DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman forward Wendell Carter, Jr. has been named the ACC Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.
Carter had a career night in just 18 minutes of action versus Evansville, logging career highs in points (27), field goals (9) and three-pointers (4) in the Blue Devils’ 104-40 victory on December 20 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
The 6-foot-10 rookie from Atlanta was 9-of-15 from the field, 4-of-7 from long range and knocked down all five free throws for his 27 points that led four Blue Devils in double figures. Carter also had five rebounds to go with one assist and one blocked shot.
Over the last four-plus seasons, Duke has had an ACC Rookie of the Week in 37 of a possible 75 weeks. Carter is one of 10 different Blue Devils to have won the award at least once.
Duke’s 64-point margin of victory over Evansville was tied for the seventh-largest in school history, while Evansville’s 40 points marked the 10th time under Coach K that an opponent scored 40 or fewer. For the season, Carter is one of five on the Duke roster averaging double-figure points (13.7).
No. 4 Duke (12-1) is back in action Dec. 30, hosting Florida State at Cameron Indoor Stadium at 2 p.m. on CBS.
