Baye Ndongo’s slam dunk with 44 seconds left capped a 21-point day for the freshman and broke a 68-68 tie for Georgia Tech on its way to a 72-68 win over No. 7 Duke on Dec. 2 at McCamish Pavilion.
It was Georgia Tech’s second victory of the week over a nationally ranked opponent (Tech also defeated No. 21 Mississippi State, 67-59) and first win over a top-10 opponent since February of 2020.
Ndongo’s go-ahead dunk was the highlight of a wild final four minutes that featured four ties and two lead changes. Sparked by multiple big runs, Georgia Tech led throughout most of the game, including four double-digit leads in the second half alone. However, Duke clawed back into the game with a 20-6 run of its own and took its biggest lead of the contest at 66-62 with 2:22 to go. Back-to-back slam dunks by Mark Mitchell gave the Blue Devils the four-point edge, but following the second dunk, Mitchell was hit with a technical foul for taunting.

Thoughts
Tyrese Proctor exited the first game early only playing 1 minute, this rematch is a change for Duke to even up and prove they’ve learned for that early ACC loss. The Blue Devils had every opportunity to put away the Yellow Jackets in the first meeting but Duke’s defense was porous. Duke allowed the Yellow Jackets to shoot over 50% from the field and allowed Baye Ndongo to score 21 points on 9-11 shooting.
Offensively, I do not think Duke will have issues but defensively the Blue Devils need to shore up their both their perimeter and post defense. Kowacie Reeves shot 4-5 from beyond the arc on his way to 14 points. The first half saw the Yellow Jackets shoot 46.4% from 3 as a team while Duke struggled with just 20%. T
Duke’s offense since Georgia Tech has looked a lot more fluid and fast but as the second half of the Georgia Tech game showed (where the Blue Devils led in points off of turnovers, paint points, bench points, second change points )that defense is what should win this game for the Blue Devils.
