Duke freshman men’s basketball forward Dariq Whitehead underwent successful surgery on Tuesday to repair a fracture in his right foot.
The surgical procedure was performed by Duke Athletics Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ned Amendola to repair the injury sustained on Monday, August 29 during a team workout. Whitehead begins rehab immediately and is expected to play this fall.
“We are happy to share that Dariq underwent a successful procedure today, and is in the best care with our doctors and rehabilitation staff,” said head coach Jon Scheyer. “We’re confident he’ll be back on the court soon.”
Named the Naismith High School Player of the Year for 2022, Whitehead graduated from Montverde Academy in Florida where he helped lead the program to national championship titles in 2021 and 2022. The 6-foot-6 Newark, N.J., native averaged 17.6 points, 3.6 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game as a senior. He entered Duke as the No. 2 prospect in the ESPN 100 class of 2022 rankings and was named to the McDonald’s All-American roster in January.
Duke’s 2022-23 season opener is set for Monday, Nov. 7 versus Jacksonville at Cameron Indoor Stadium.
