With Assistant Coach Nolan Smith accepting a position as Associate Head Coach under Kenny Payne at Louisville, Duke and Jon Scheyer have hired Elon Coach Mike Schrage to fill a staff vacancy. Elon today announced Schrage would be resigning and it was reported that Schrage would be joining Scheyers staff.

Schrage’s name should be familiar with Duke fans as he spent several years at Duke under Coach K. During his tenure at Duke, Schrage was a member of Duke’s 2001 national championship squad and two NCAA Final Four teams. He served as the program’s director of basketball operations from 2002-08. Schrage also served as the program’s academic and recruiting coordinator from 1999-2002, his first three years at Duke.

He also spent 8 seasons as an assistant under Johnny Dawkins at Stanford. Schrage joined the Elon men’s basketball program after spending two seasons as an assistant coach at Ohio State for head coach Chris Holtmann, prior to that Schrage spent one season on Holtmann’s staff at Butler in 2016-17.

Signs are pointing to Amile Jefferson possibly being promoted to fill another vacant spot on the bench as an assistant. Currently Jefferson is the Director of Player Development.
