Austin Grandstaff. If you’ve been under a rock you may not know the name but the 2015 combo guard has been blowing up lately. Grandstaff scored 51 points Saturday night- he also added 9 rebounds and 6 assists. The junior guard had 45 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists last night. He’s been the biggest difference in the resurgence of the Rockwall Yellowjackets, helping to take them from zero to hero this year.
Per Matt Wixon w/ Dallas Morning News:
A year ago, Rockwall finished 0-12 in District 12-5A. This season, the Yellow Jackets were 8-4 and are the second seed in the playoffs. That’s a pretty dramatic turnaround.
A big reason is the turnaround of guard Austin Grandstaff, who played the early part of last season for Rockwall before heading off to Huntington Prep in West Virginia.
Grandstaff is back with Rockwall for his junior season, and he’s averaging 26 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. The 6-4 guard, who Rivals.com rates as the No. 32 recruit nationally in the Class of 2015, scored 51 points Saturday in a playoff warmup game against Wilmer-Hutchins.
His performances on the court have not gone unnoticed as Division I college programs are looking at the junior.
Rockwall (16-11) plays Sachse (12-13) on Tuesday in the Class 5A Region II bidistrict playoffs.
Austin was named Boys basketball player of the week (2/17) by the Dallas Morning News and on the recruiting trail most recently UNLV has offered and Florida & Carolina have been in contact, look for more schools to jump and his stock to rise even more in the coming weeks.
