Per Duke Comms:

Duke men’s basketball sophomore Kyle Filipowski has earned several national recognitions, including a spot on 2024 Men’s National Ballot for the John R. Wooden Award, Sporting News All-America Third Team and Associated Press All-ACC First Team.

The Wooden national ballot consists of 15 student-athletes who are candidates for the Wooden Award All-American Team and Wooden Award Trophy as the most outstanding college basketball player in the United States, most recently won by a Blue Devil when Zion Williamson did so in 2019.

A native of Westtown, New York, Filipowski was named First Team All-ACC on March 11 after improving in nearly all statistical categories as a sophomore. He has already surpassed his freshman assist total with 88, has blocked 50 shots – nearly double his freshman total – is shooting 50.4 percent from the field and is knocking in 3-pointers at a 35.3 percent clip, all en route to an average of 16.7 points and 8.0 rebounds per game.

After 16 double-doubles as a freshman, Filipowski has already added eight to his career total this season, including a strong performance at Pittsburgh on Jan. 9 in which he finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds while making 11-of-12 field goals, including all four threes. The shooting performance marked the best by a Blue Devil with at least 10 attempts since Zion Williamson finished 13-of-13 against Syracuse on March 14, 2019.

Filipowski has scored at least 10 points in all but seven games this season, has reached at least 20 points 11 separate times and amassed a career-high 30 points alongside 13 rebounds against Georgia Tech in mid-January – the first Blue Devil to record a 30-point double-double since Vernon Carey Jr. tallied 31 and 12 versus California on Nov. 21, 2019. He added four assists, two blocks and two steals against the Yellow Jackets, all without committing a turnover, becoming the first Duke player with a 30-point double-double and no turnovers in the past 40 seasons.

For the Wooden Award, all balloted players have been certified by their university to meet or exceed the qualifications for the Wooden Award as set forth by Coach Wooden when the Award was established. The qualifications include: candidates must exhibit strength of character, both on and off the court; candidates must be full-time students in an accredited NCAA college or university; candidates must be making progress toward graduation and have a cumulative 2.00 grade point average since enrolling in their school; candidates must contribute to team effort; candidates must excel in both offense and defense; and candidates should be considered on their performance over the course of the entire season.

Voting will take place from March 18-25, and voters take into consideration a player’s entire season of play, as well as the opening rounds of the NCAA Tournament. The finalists for the 2024 Wooden Award presented by Principal will be announced on April 2.
