Duke freshman Kyle Filipowski has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week after leading the No. 7 Blue Devils to two wins in the opening week of the 2022-23 season.
Filipowski became just the second freshman in program history to tally back-to-back double-doubles in the first two games of a season, joining Marvin Bagley III (2017-18). Over the last 10-plus seasons (since the start of 2013-14), the ACC Rookie of the Week has been a Blue Devil in 75 of a possible 154 weeks. 22 different Duke freshmen have won the award at least once in that time.
The Westtown, N.Y., native scored 10 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in Duke’s 71-44 season-opening win against Jacksonville on 4-of-8 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from beyond the arc, while also leading the team with two blocks.
He followed up with a game-high 15 points alongside 10 rebounds in the Blue Devils’ 84-38 defeat of USC Upstate. Filipowski also led the team with a 7-of-8 performance from the free throw line and swiped two steals.
Filipowski is the only freshman in the country to have two double-doubles so far this season, and currently leads Duke in rebounds per game (11.0) and free throw percentage (.875).
Duke (2-0) takes on Kansas (2-0) in the State Farm Champions Classic on Tuesday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind., with tip-off scheduled for 9:30 p.m. on ESPN.
