DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman Marvin Bagley III has been named a first-team All-America selection by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC), his third first-team All-America selection this season.
Bagley has already been named a first-team All-American by Sporting News and the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA). Should he earn first-team honors from the Associated Press (which is released next week), he would become the 22nd consensus first-team All-American in Duke history and the 18th under head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Jahlil Okafor (2015), Jabari Parker (2014) and Nolan Smith (2011) are Duke’s three most-recent consensus first-team All-Americans.
The 6-foot-11 forward from Phoenix, Ariz., who is also a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award, the James Naismith Award, and the Karl Malone Award, leads the ACC in scoring (21.2) and rebounding (11.3). After becoming the second player to sweep the ACC Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year awards, Bagley is aiming to become the 13th player, and first freshman, to lead the conference in scoring and rebounding.
Bagley is one of four players nationally averaging 20.0+ points and 10.0+ rebounds this season. He set the program record in dunks in a season with 92, which is more than Duke’s opponents have combined for this season (85). He has set a litany of Duke freshman records including rebounds (349), 30-point games (7), double-doubles (21), 15+ rebound games (8), and 20-10 games (12). He enters the Sweet 16 just 15 points shy of eclipsing Duke’s freshman scoring record of 670 points set by Jabari Parker in 2014.
Second-seeded Duke (28-7) meets 11th-seeded Syracuse (23-13) in the Midwest Regional Semifinal on Friday at 9:30 p.m. ET on CBS.
