DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman forward Matthew Hurt has been named ACC Freshman of the Week after helping lead the Blue Devils to back-to-back victories over conference opponents last week.
Hurt averaged a team-leading 19.0 points in a pair of lopsided ACC wins as Duke beat Boston College, 88-49, on Tuesday and Miami, 95-62, on Saturday in Coral Gables, Fla. He scored a career-high 25 points in the win over the Eagles, hitting 10-of-16 (.625) from the field, including 5-of-10 from three-point range to go with four rebounds and one steal in 26 minutes.
The freshman from Rochester, Minn., followed with 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting at Miami, while setting career highs in both assists (four) and steals (three). Hurt also blocked two shots at Miami and pulled down six rebounds. For the week, he was 16-of-24 (.667) from the field and 6-of-12 (.500) from three-point range. He is the ACC’s fourth-leading three-point shooter in conference play at .533.
The honor is the fourth received by Duke this season, as Vernon Carey Jr., was recognized three times in the season’s first seven weeks (11/25, 12/9, 12/23). Duke has now had an ACC Freshman of the Week in 59 of a possible 117 weeks over the last six-plus seasons, with 15 different Blue Devils winning the award at least once in that time.
The No. 2 Blue Devils (13-1, 3-0) continue their conference slate when they travel to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech (7-7, 2-2) on Wednesday at 9 p.m. ET at McCamish Pavilion. The game can be seen live on the ACC Network.
