Being named a captain is a position of honor when it comes to Duke Basketball one that is earned. In a COVID interrupted and shortened last season there were no stated captains of Duke Basketball and it showed at times on the court. For the 2021-2022 season the Blue Devils have voted as a team to name senior forward Joey Baker and junior guard/forward Wendell Moore Jr. (as reported by Steve Wiseman of The News & Observer) as team captains. Both Baker and Moore have extensive experience on the court and both have experienced highs and lows during their tenures in Durham. How Baker and Moore have handled themselves and how they are shepherding this new group will go along way toward how good this team will be this season.
Joey Baker averaged 3 points per game last season and is looking to regain his form that saw him shoot just under 40% during his sophomore season. Wendell Moore Jr. averages just under 10 points a game up from 7.4 his freshmen season. Moore has had an excellent pre-season so far and from reports from the coaching staff has improved his athleticism and has become a more vocal leader on the floor.
“This is such a tremendous and well-deserved honor for Joey and Wendell,” said Krzyzewski. “Our team could not have selected two more worthy captains, who are each great leaders in their own way. Wendell and Joey are hardworking, selfless, and humble and set a daily example with how beautifully they represent our program. Our team is in great hands as we prepare for this season.”
