DURHAM, N.C. – Duke freshman Vernon Carey Jr., has been named the ACC Freshman of the Week after leading the Blue Devils to an 86-57 win over Wofford last Thursday night.
Carey posted his eighth double-double, which leads all NCAA freshmen, with 20 points and 10 rebounds in just 22 minutes of game action. The native of Southwest Ranches, Fla., did his damage on 8-of-11 shooting from the field and 4-of-4 from the free throw line in posting his sixth output of 20+ points and 10+ rebounds. The six 20-10 performances lead the NCAA, and each of his double-doubles this season have been 15-10 efforts. Carey leads the ACC in field goal percentage (.610), is fourth in the conference in scoring (18.6) and third in rebounds (9.3). He is fifth among NCAA freshman in field goal percentage, while ranking 25th nationally among all players – but ninth among players with 120+ FG attempts.
This marks the third ACC Freshman of the Week honor for Carey this season. Duke has now had an ACC Freshman of the Week in 58 of a possible 115 weeks over the last six-plus seasons, with 14 different Blue Devils winning the award at least once in that time.
The No. 4 Blue Devils (10-1, 1-0 ACC) will return from the holiday break when they host Brown (5-5) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. ET at Cameron Indoor Stadium. The game can be seen live on ESPN2.
