Duke junior Jeremy Roach and freshman Kyle Filipowski were presented the 2023 Swett-Baylin Most Valuable Player Award at the Duke men’s basketball annual banquet and awards ceremony, held Thursday evening at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The two were key to Duke’s success in the program’s first year under head coach Jon Scheyer, and helped lead the Blue Devils to a 27-9 record, a 22nd ACC Tournament title and the program’s 45th appearance in NCAA Tournament.

Freshman Dereck Lively II was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year, while classmate Dariq Whitehead was presented the award with the team’s highest three-point percentage. Freshman Tyrese Proctor was awarded with trophies for leading the team in both assists and free throw percentage.

Freshman Mark Mitchell was presented with the Pagliuca Family Coach’s Award for the player best displaying the commitment and values of Duke Basketball, with graduate student Ryan Young winning the award for the team’s best field goal percentage.

Sophomore Jaylen Blakes was named both the Glenn E. “Ted” Mann Award winner, for the reserve who contributes most to team morale, and the Dr. Deryl Hart Award winner, as the team’s top scholar-athlete.

Filipowski ended his stellar freshman season as a nine-time ACC Rookie of the Week, a near unanimous selection as ACC Rookie of the Year, the ACC Tournament MVP, an honorable mention AP All-American and the Kyle Macy National Freshman of the Year Award winner. He led the Blue Devils in scoring (15.1), rebounding (8.9) and steals (1.3), while leading all Division I freshmen with 16 double-doubles. The only Duke player to start all 36 games, Filipowski posted 31 games with at least 10 points and six 20-point efforts.

Filipowski also garnered an award for the team’s highest rebounding average (8.9).

Roach was the lone captain for the 2022-23 squad and produced a career year that saw him average 13.6 points, shoot .343 from three-point range, .780 from the free throw line, while averaging 3.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds in a team-leading 33.2 minutes per game. The honorable mention All-ACC pick is 20 points shy of reaching the 1,000-career point plateau.

The junior was also presented with the Iron Duke Award, given to the Blue Devil that played the most minutes (1,062), and the Bill Krzyzewski Captain’s Award.
