Duke matches up in their initial game in the NCAA Tournament with the North Dakota State Bison. The Bison won their play-in game Wednesday against North Carolina Central and are on a 5 game winning streak and have yet to drop a game in March. The Bison currently sit at 19-15. They are top 30 in the country in 3 point attempts and shoot the 3 at 36.8% The Bison are top 10 in the country in free throw shooting.
North Dakota State are led in scoring by a pair of guards, Vinnie Shahid and Tyson Ward, who average 12.9 and 12.6 respectively - with both averaging over 2 assists per game. Ward also leads the team in rebounding with 6.3 per game. The Bison boast a balanced scoring attack with 5 players averaging 7 points or more but none over 13 per game. The Bison are a 3 point shooting team that gets over 40% of their offense from 3 point shots so while the scouting report should be guard the perimeter, there should also be an asterisk because this team also may try to attack Duke on the close outs. They are top 10 in the country in free throw shooting percentage so the Blue Devils have to do a good job of guarding without fouling and be ultra aware of who the shooters are. Like Duke, the Bison are not an old team - older than Duke but relatively young, the Bison have no seniors on their team whatsoever and start 3 juniors, a freshman an one sophomore.
The Bison and the Blue Devils do have one common opponent this season in the Gonzaga Bulldogs who defeated both teams back in November with Duke losing to the Zags by 2 and the Bison by 42. In their initial first four game against North Carolina Central the Bison shot 45% from 3 with Ward scoring a game high 23 points.
